"Au pair" is a French term, meaning "on par." As an au pair, you will live with a host hamily as a member of their family, assisting with child care while experiencing everyday life in a new culture. Some of your duties may include dropping the children off and picking them up from school, playing with them and helping them with their homework. You will also be asked to perform light housekeeping, such as helping to keep the children's room tidy and cooking light meals for them. Au pairs are not, however, responsible for housework unrelated to the children, nor are they responsible for managing the entire household should the parents go away.

Although the placement should not be considered a "job," there is a great amount of responsibility involved in caring for children. Being an au pair also involves a certain degree of self-motivation; what you get out of the program will be primarily your responsibility, not necessarily that of the host family.

All au pair positions require a great deal of adaptability, a good sense of humor, patience, hard work and especially a genuine love of children. Participants with warm, outgoing personalities and a sense of independence do particularly well as au pairs. Applicants must also:

have practical experience caring for children (e.g. baby-sitting or camp counseling)
be of good character and in good health
have earned a high school diploma (more or less)
